About Dust...
Event Horizon Dance presents...
Dust… promises to be a stimulating evening of choreography from Artistic Director Miranda
Abbott that explores the intersection of movement and philosophy, mathematics and science. Through movement, sound, video
illustrations/animations and text, Dust… examines some of the most influential theories and ideas that have led us
to our present being.
First, by proposing a series of numbers
as experienced through movement, the work explores the equations of Newtonian mechanics, the recurrence of the Fibonacci sequence
and the golden ratio, before proposing a consideration of the Computational Theory of the Mind, a dominant paradigm in psychology
and neuroscience. After exploring whether our minds are similar to the inner-workings of a computer, and the implications
this comparison holds for the concepts of free will and rational choice, Dust... breaks away from the mathematical theorems
to reveal the joy of just being.
Linda Fabi, Director of Education of the Waterloo Region District School
Board says, “I believe that this cross-curricular approach encourages students to link the arts with the study of science,
mathematics and philosophy. Through dance, students can learn to think critically about complex issues, analyze and adapt
to new situations, solve problems of various kinds, and communicate effectively.”
“Community
partnerships with working artists, dancers, dramatists and musicians have been the focus of many projects in our schools,”
said Roger Lawler, Director of Education of the Waterloo Catholic District School Board. “The idea of "learning
through the arts" to engage students in a differentiated strategy of curriculum delivery is key to meeting the needs
of every child.”
